When it’s moving season in Texas, it’s REALLY moving season in Texas! Between 2011 and 2012 more than 200,000 people moved to Texas from other parts of the country. That puts Texas at the top of the list for new arrivals throughout the U.S. — more folks are moving to Texas than to any other state in the Union.
Anyone who’s lived here for a while could probably list 100 reasons why it’s a great place to make your home. But here’s a list of the top 5 reasons to move to Texas, courtesy of (oddly enough) the BBC:
1. We’ve got jobs
From the oil fields to high tech, there’s plenty of work in Texas. In fact, four of 2013’s top 10 metropolitan areas for jobs are in Texas: Fort Worth/Arlington, Houston/Sugar Land, Dallas/Plano/Irving, and Austin/Round Rock/San Marcos.
2. Living is affordable here
A comparatively low cost of living makes paychecks go a little further in Texas — and those little things can mean a lot! For example, while pay scales might be higher in L.A. or San Francisco, housing costs there are through the roof. In Texas it’s still possible for blue-collar folks to own a home and enjoy the benefits of a comfortable life.
3. Low taxes
Our secret is out. Texas is only one of seven states in the U.S. where there’s no personal state income tax. Sure, we pay a lot in property taxes — but there are only five states in the country with a lower individual tax burden. Businesses stand to benefit from tax incentives here as well.
4. Great choices for city-dwellers
If you love living in a big city, you can pick your spot here in Texas. Six of the 20 biggest cities in the country are right here — Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, Fort Worth, and El Paso are all on the list. How great is that? Just compare it to states like Illinois (it’s Chicago or nothing) or Massachusetts (where else but Boston?) and you’ll get the picture.
5. We’re down home friendly
Visitors to Texas love our unpretentious style. Austin in particular gets universal raves for its great music scene, its natural beauty and its dedication to building a better future. We make life easy for families here, providing them with low mortgages, good schools and restaurants that actually welcome kids.
And if that’s not enough:
Here in Texas we also have bragging rights to five of the top 10 U.S. cities with the greatest increase in population, with Houston at #2, San Antonio at #4 and Austin right behind at #5. Coming in seventh is Dallas, and Fort Worth ends the list at #10.
It gets even more impressive when you look at growth percentages. In proportion to their size, three of the top 10 highest growth cities in the country are in Texas — Austin has the highest growth rate in all 50 states, while Houston and Dallas also made the list.
During this busy moving season, take a moment to meet your new neighbors. They just might be one of the many families moving to Texas from out of state. And join us in giving them a warm, friendly Texas welcome!
